The Huffington Post article, " 'Zhenya' Mammoth Find In North Russia, Biggest In 100 Years, Made By 11-Year-Old Evgeny Salinder," published by Ryan Grenoble, the remaining of a mammoth was found in North Russia by an eleven year old boy named, Evgeny Salinder. This second well preserved mammoth is thought to be about 30,000 years old. This discovered creature is known to be the largest mammoth that has been unearthed since 1901. After finding the mammoth, he informed his parents, who alerted to the appropriate authority. The scientists, later, wished to show this young boy respect and their gratitude by informally naming the creature Evgeny's nickname, "Zhenya." However, its actual legitimate name is Sopkarginsky Mammoth. Researchers have estimated the age of the creature when it died to be around fifteen to sixteen years old. Compared to previously found mammoths, this one is profoundly unique. It was not discovered as a skeleton; but as an animal in its standard state of flesh and bones, which weighed approximately half a ton. The animal's flesh, bones, fat, and organs were properly and naturally perpetuated throughout the centuries! Because of this life changing encounter, scientist were able to revise their false assumptions by now confidently stating that the "humps" on a mammoths back are certainly not bones. They are actually a large storage of fat that helped the extinct creature survive during outrageous winters. According to Itar-Tass, it will be transported to the history museum of Taimyr. Lastly, researchers belonging to the Russian Academy of Sciences, will study this magnificent mammal at the Zoological and Paleontological Museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

It is surprising to see how after 30,000 years, this creature is not in skeleton form. It is a miracle to find a mammoth in this condition. This will correct the false claims we have made about mammoths for example the humps on the back. The found mammoth is a prime example of how little we know about extinct species.
ReplyDeleteAs I was reading the article, my eyes were slowly becoming wider and wider. It is truly amazing how a 30,000 year old form of life has survived throughout all these years. It is even more amazing how it stayed in such a preserved manner, and it is evident in the pictures also. I can understand how humongous of a blessing it is to scientists who study history through science. I can not imagine, however, being an eleven year old kid finding evidence of an extinct animal.
ReplyDeleteAfter 30,000 years, a mammoth's carcass being preserved this well is truly spectacular. Through this great finding, we learned more about this extinct creature, such as the humps on its back, making us more intelligent about this ice age beast. It is also astonishing at how advanced our technology is, to tell us the age of the mammoth and how many years have passed since the its death. This is a gift for all scientists to discover more about this ancient creature.
ReplyDeleteAll I have to say is "Wow". To find such a majestic creature so well preserve after tens of thousands of years of extinction is remarkable. And, to think that it was discovered by only an eleven year old boy makes it even more spectacular. This young boy accomplished what many scientists and archaeologists have been trying to do their entire careers. Although it may have been an accident or a surprise encounter for the boy, he has contributed greatly to science with his findings. Evgeny Salinder is worthy of a great reward besides having the mammoth named after his nickname. Because of his discovery and further research scientists may now confirm that the humps on a mammoth's back were not made up of bones but, stored fat.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to me how every single man can make a difference in research. Because of an eleven year old boy, a new fact has been proven. Animals of all kinds especially extinct ones catch my interest greatly. This article was quite entertaining and surely inspiring.
ReplyDeleteIt is very interesting to see that after 30,000 years a dead mammoths bones and flesh were still there. It is incredibke how an eleven year old boy discovered such a great finding that helped scientists come to a new and improved conclusion about a mammoth's humps being made out of fat. Not only did this little boy experience a scene that he will never forget but also he provided everyone with knowledge about a deceased animal. This article was very interesting because it surprised me how a dead animal's body was preserved after all those years.
ReplyDeleteIt is inspiring to hear that an eleven year old boy could make a such a discovery of a mammoth dated back to the Ice Age. It is even surprising to see how the mammoth is not a skeleton, but still an animal with its original body after all these years. Since the animal is now extinct, the mammoth will come to great importance in the museum it is put into and to archeologists. I agree with Ani, anyone can make a difference with a small discovery and help make a change in research.
